Philipp Roelli

I have spent most of my life studying science and scholarship. After graduating in microbiology, I started to learn the ancient languages, then studied them scientifically (philology and linguistics). I am now working mostly on topics related to the history of science and with Latin texts. Below a detailled CV.

My doctoral thesis was a first edition of a 13th-century anthology of the Church Fathers, published in CCSG as vol. 72 (2010). A German translation of this text followed in Corpus Christianorum in Translation in 2013. I habilitated in 2021 with a study on Latin as the Lanugae of Science and Learning in which I tried to apply corpus linguistic methods to differentiate various types of scholarly Latin prose. The book also contains a historical panorama of Latin science and learning from the beginnings to the end of its use in this function in the 18th/19th centuries.

In addition, since 2010 I have been researching mathematical methods for the classification of manuscripts. I have edited two fifteenth-century treatises: Lambertus de Monte, De salvatione Aristotelis (Winter Verlag, Heidelberg), and, together with Prof. Peter Stotz, De cometis by the Zurich scholar Eberhard Schleusinger, dated c. 1472. Online version.

Together with Jan Ctibor (University of Prague), I am developing the open, linguistically usable Latin online text collection CORPUS CORPORUM. We can easily add freely available texts formatted in TEI XML this database. It allows them to be searched and studied online in a comprehensive manner. This project was funded by COST (Action IS1005) in collaboration with the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (Grant C12.0053). In 2023 and 2024, it was funded by the University of Zurich’s Digital Teaching and Research funding programme. 2026-2027 it will be funded by ULF, University of Zurich.

Furthermore, I was (together with Caroline Macé) the editor of the Parvum Lexicon Stemmatologicum and edited the follow-up project Handbook of Stemmatology: History, Methodology, Digital Approaches (De Gruyter 2020).

At present, my research focuses primarily on Latin as a language of scholarship and the interactions of Christianity and science (planned book).

I am employed as a researcher and lecturer at the Chair of Medieval Latin, IAKA Institute, University of Zurich.
